Types of paint

Interior paint

Interior paint for walls and ceilings is almost always water based and comes with low levels of VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds), making it safe and less smelly! Here are a few things to check when choosing interior wall and ceiling paint:

Sheen levels

Current trends for very matte finishes are covered by all the major brands such as Johnstone's Trade Perfect Matt, Dulux Trade Vinyl Matt and Tikkurilla Optiva 3 Ceramic. But don't worry, luxurious silks or satins are still available and have advantages in some rooms.

Scrubbability

Coffee? Crayon? Mud? Muck? No more worries! Paint with a high 'scrub factor' is perfect or those high traffic areas where marks and scuffs are inevitable.

Woodwork and trim paint

Skirting, doors, window frames and other wooden surfaces need a different coating from plasterwork. This doesn't restrict the colours available but you may want to consider sheen levels when you think about durability.

Exterior paint

Protect your home (or shed, fence or even bird box!) with a tough, weather proof exterior paint. Especially here in Sussex with salt-breezes off the sea, it is really important to select the most suitable paint for brickwork, masonry or timber. Breathability is another big factor to ensure historic materials don't start developing damp or other issues.

Specialist and preparation paint

Metals, floors, kitchen cabinets, u-PVC and other plastics all require specialist paints to ensure proper adhesion and coverage. We have extensive ranges from Hammerite, Rust-Oleum, BedecCoo-var and more.

Preparation is key to a successful redecoration project. Lots of paint types come with matching primers or undercoat to make sure you get the best results.
Specialist primers to deal with mould, stains and damp are available from Zinsser and many of the major brands.

Info on the process

Find your colours

Use paint swatches and sample pots to help you find the right colours. Make sure you look at colours at different times of day and in different light to check it does the trick!

Work out how much paint you need

Use manufacturer's coverage guidelines and don't forget you might need multiple coats!
Make sure you order all your coloured paint in one go to avoid the possibility of a slight mismatch.
This is particularly true for custom colours that are not specified by manufacturers.

Gather your equipment

Whether you're a professional decorator, or going DIY, we can help make sure you match the right brushes and rollers to the surface and paint. Plus all the tools for preparation, protection and cleaning up.

Matching other colours

Our expert team have all the technical skills needed to match pretty much any colour you can think of.

Other paint colour schemes

If you cannot find a shade you like from our brand selection, we can match the colour ranges of almost every other manufacturer using our advanced digital process. You will need to know the brand (eg, Little Greene, Lick, Valspar), colour name and code if possible.

Be aware that the tone, sheen and micro-texture of different paint brands will not match! Basically, if you want to match a designer colour, you will have great success if you do the whole space, but if you do one wall with Tikkurila and one wall with Dulux they will be slightly different!

Samples from elsewhere

Got a favourite colour in a picture, artwork or homewares item!? We can match this with our optical scanner to generate a near-perfect match. As long as the item has a smooth, consistent texture.
