Key Cutting Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take?

We can nearly always do key cutting while-you-wait, in a few minutes. If you phone ahead our staff can advise on the rare types of key that may take longer.

Can I drop off and pick up later?

Yes. Drop off and collect same-day or later. Your originals and new copies will be kept securely.

Do I need to bring my original key or can I copy a copy?

Yes. We can copy from a copy as long as it works correctly. It is better to copy from an original key. If the key we are copying is badly cut or has become worn your new copy is unlikely to work well.

Can you cut a blank that I supply?

As long as the original and blank are compatible with our machines. We cannot guarantee the quality of blanks we do not supply.

What can I do with a stuck, broken, bent or damaged key?

You will need a locksmith for any keys that are still in the lock. Our service is in store only. We can often create a working copy from bent or slightly damaged keys but cannot offer any guarantees.

What happens if the new key doesn't work?

Bring it back to us and we will make a new copy or refund your spend. We advise you test keys while still keeping hold of the original.

Can I have a fancy coloured key or fob?

We have a useful range of fobs and key rings to help you identify your keys.

Can you copy car keys?

We do not have the equipment to copy car keys or remote locking devices. We do stock many of the batteries that fit into car key fobs.

Can you copy specialist security keys?

We can do a very limited range of these but you will normally have to contact the lock installer or manufacturer. Please contact your branch for advice.

Can you supply several locks that work with the same keys?

Yes. But there is a limited range of types and styles. Please contact your branch for advice.

Do you offer account services and bulk prices for key cutting?

Yes. All of our normal Gardner and Scardifield account services apply to our key cutting. Please contact your branch for advice.

Is VAT charged on key cutting?

Yes. Key cutting is eligible for VAT.
