Rory McCann

It is with great sadness that I have to announce that Rory McCann, my fellow director of Gardner and Scardifield, passed away last Friday Morning.

Rory took over Gardner and Scardifield some 45 years ago, working originally with my father, and for the last 40 years alongside myself. During this time, the company has grown from one premises in South Street, Lancing to over 15 branches spread across West Sussex, employing some 150 staff. He took great pride in the company, its staff and their achievements and anyone who ever met or dealt with him would never forget his great character, incredible knowledge and passion for life.  This was especially the case at our Ironmongers in Penhill Road, Lancing, which he ran for many years and was the engine room of the company, with long serving staff and customers no doubt remembering him with great fondness. He had also taken a new lease of life in the past year while setting up our new Horsham Hardware store and I know he took great pride in how this progressed.

It is hard to put into words the vacuum that will be in my life after 40 years as well as at the ‘heart’ of Gardner and Scardifield but I, and all who knew Rory, will want to pass on our heartfelt condolences to Sheena, Kieran, Siobhan and the rest of his family. Due to the difficult timing of his tragic passing, we can’t do much more than this at this point. However, when the time is right, we, as a company, will celebrate his life and all he brought to Gardner and Scardifield, the local community and everyone associated.

RIP Rory McCann 1953-2020
