Pruning fruit trees
It is best to prune fruit trees in the winter when they are dormant. A sharp pair or secateurs are advisable as this will help prevent branches tearing which may lead to wounds on the tree. Our Garden Centre offers a tool sharpening service, should you need any blades sharpening. It is recommended that diseased, dead and overcrowded shoots are cut back first. It is advisable to cut one third off any young extensions at the end of main branches. In addition, it commonplace to leave three buds on each side shoot, cutting off the remaining buds.
