Jobs to do in the Garden (November)

Keep an eye on the local weather forecast.

With the unusual warm weather of the previous month, the plants don't know what time of year it is.
Be prepared to protect them either by mulching up, encapsulating with straw, or wrapping in fleece. Fleece can be cut to length, and is available by the metre, up to 250metres.

If frost is present:

  • Try to avoid walking on the lawns, as this will damage the grass leaves.
  • Also avoid digging in frost covered soil, as this will harm the micro-organisms just below the surface.

If the weather holds:

  • Continue to clear borders
  • Remove worm casts from lawns, by brushing. A Beesom broom is the ideal tool for the job, and will also keep the lawn free of fallen leaves.

Spring bulbs, can still be planted, if the ground is suitable. Bedding them into a layer of horticultural sand, will ensure the roots do not sit in water, and that the bulb does not become too wet.

Roses should be trimmed by a third; this will prevent wind rock, when the roots become exposed.

Prevent winter moth damage to Fruit trees by adding a grease band around the trunk.

Bird feeders should be cleaned, and replenished. They always appreciate clean, frsh water too.

Bubble wrap makes an excellent addition to the greenhouse, again available by the metre from the Garden Centre.
